Mental Health

VA Healthcare-VISN 20 is committed to a recovery-oriented approach to mental health care for Veterans. We want to ensure mental illness is not the center of any Veteran's world. Our mission is to promote the highest level of wellness, and life satisfaction for every Veteran we care for.

If you have experienced:

  • a serious or life-threatening traumatic experience
  • nightmares
  • excessive irritability
  • difficulty sleeping
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • difficulty readjusting to civilian life
  • struggles with alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs
  • military sexual trauma
  • severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  • homelessness

Please take one of the following actions:

  • Visit one of VISN 20's ten medical centers.
  • Stop by one of our 39 community-based outpatient clinics.
  • Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (press 1).
  • Click on www.veteranscrisisline.net to chat with a trained counselor.

Services Available Throughout VISN 20

If you have post-traumatic stress disorder, medication or evidence-based treatments (such as cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and prolonged exposure therapy) may be able to help you manage your symptoms.

Our treatments for substance abuse can include medications to decrease cravings for and ease withdrawal, therapeutic substitutes, psychotherapy, or residential treatment programs for intensive treatment.

Our Veterans Justice Outreach Partnership is a unique program that gets Veterans the treatment they need as an alternative to incarceration. Working together with local courts, we connect Veterans with resources to help them combat the problems at the root of their legal troubles. Each of our medical centers has a staff member dedicated to working with Veterans involved with the justice system.

We also offer TeleMental health services for Veterans who live a distance away from a medical center or a clinic, or who find it difficult to get to one of our facilities.

If you are a Veteran with concerns about your mental health, please contact the VA or visit one of our medical centers or outpatient clinics soon. Remember it takes the strength and courage of a warrior to ask for help!
