Voluntary Service - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What does VAVS stand for?

    The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS)

  2. Can I be a Volunteer if I was hospitalized within the last six months?

    No. You cannot have been hospitalized within the last six (6) months.

  3. How many hours must I volunteer to qualify for a meal ticket?

    You must work a minimum of five (5) hours a day to qualify for a meal ticket. The five (5) hours does not include travel time or socializing in the volunteer workroom.

  4. Does Voluntary Services pay for or reimburse for public transportation?

    No. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to the Medical Center. Volunteers are issued parking stickers for their vehicle, however, which entitles them to park without cost in Patient/Visitor Parking.

  5. How long does it take to become a Volunteer?

    The process usually takes about two weeks. The process involves completion of all paperwork, an initial interview, completion of a background check, a TB test, and orientation.

  6. I just had my fingerprints checked by another agency do I have to do it again?

    Yes. A criminal background check is required unless the person has been a Federal Employee in the past year.

  7. What is the time commitment for volunteering?

    We ask for a 6 month commitment due to the cost of processing volunteers.
