Interns typically work a 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Modifications may be made on occasion, depending on rotation-specific duties. Interns may request four hours each week to work on their dissertations or research projects.

The intern class shares a spacious office furnished with desks, computers, and telephones for each intern. Sharing this space provides consultation opportunities with colleagues and builds camaraderie within the intern class. Past intern classes have reported that they prefer this arrangement to individual, isolating offices. The intern office (fondly referred to as the "bullpen") offers a splendid view of downtown Portland and the Willamette River.

At the end of each busy workweek interns are given one hour of "process" time during which they are encouraged to socialize with one another, discuss issues related to their individual rotations, and offer support to each other. Interns are encouraged to enjoy this time away from the Medical Center. Past intern classes have explored Portland's excellent array of restaurants for this "meeting," while others choose to relax on the waterfront or at a local park.
