The city was founded 1850 by Aaron Rose where Deer Creek flows into the South Umpqua River. It was incorporated in 1872, and was home of the southern terminal of the Oregon & California Railroad. Douglas County incorporates the entire watershed of the Umpqua River, from its beginning high in the Cascades to where it joins the Pacific Ocean at Reedsport.

The Umpqua Indians of the Umpqua Valley belong to the Chinook tribe. Following the Rogue River Indian War in 1856, all remaining natives were moved by the government to the Siletz and Grande Ronde Indian Reservations.

Environs
At 1,932 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and the seventh deepest in the world. To find Crater Lake From Roseburg take Route 138 east to the park's north entrance.

The North Umpqua River passes through Glide, Oregon, 16 miles east of Roseburg along Highway 138. The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway parallels the river and offers breathtaking scenery to Toketee, where the river diverts into the Cascades and the road continues to Diamond Lake and Crater Lake National Park.
